About

About Anchor Social and the data behind it

We sell link data by the call. Our focus is the people who open a spreadsheet to study anchor text, branded shares and peer baselines.

What we are

A small API and explorer. It returns backlinks, referring domains, anchors, top pages and a 0 to 100 Domain Rating for any domain, as JSON, from our own crawler and our own index.

The index holds 181,132,097 domains, 2,774,625,913 domain-to-domain links and about 798.5 billion backlinks. It refreshes roughly once a month, which suits trend work and does not suit live monitoring.

We write for one kind of reader. Someone who thinks in rows and columns, and wants anchor text analysis they can repeat next month and explain to a client.

Our crawler visits the public web, and every number you see on the site comes from that one index rather than from licensed third-party feeds.

Who writes here and why anchors

The site is maintained by the Anchor Social research team. We do not publish individual author names or invented bios.

Anchor text is the most legible signal in a backlink profile, and the one people argue about longest. A buyer wants it quantified, an editor wants it explained, and an auditor wants it repeatable. That is the corner we picked.

Practical consequence: our pages lean on checklists, tables and runbooks instead of opinion pieces. You will find a free checker page that says where free ends, and a troubleshooting table for odd pulls.

What we do not do

No keyword research. No rank tracking. No daily crawl.

If you need those, Ahrefs and Semrush are the fuller products, and we say so in plain text across the site. Our Domain Rating follows a public formula, round(100 · log(ref_domains+1) / log(2·10^7)), and is not the same number as Ahrefs DR or Moz DA.

We also make no promises about rankings. A tidy anchor profile removes one risk; it does not move a page by itself.

Our own limits matter as much as our features. The graph is monthly. It is poor for catching a link the day it goes live, and nothing replaces reading the pages that link to you.

What readers use us for

  • Peer baselines

Pull anchors for four ranking rivals and compare shares, as in our worked example. Cost is a few cents.

  • Monthly snapshots

One file per month per domain, diffed in Google Sheets. The runbook shows the layout.

  • Pre-purchase checks

Look at a site's anchors and rating before you pay for a placement there. Red flags are covered in the myths page.

How we write

Every page here is built around a question that people in this niche actually ask: how to bucket anchors, why totals differ between tools, what to do before a migration.

Where we use an example, it says so in the first line. Where a figure comes from the product, it is one of the numbers on this page: 181,132,097 domains, 2,774,625,913 links, about 798.5 billion backlinks.

Dated events are real. Penguin 4.0 arrived in September 2016, the link spam update in December 2022, and spam-focused updates followed in March 2024 and August 2025. We cite them as context, never as a promise of how Google will behave next.
